Magnetic Island, Australia
Like 1770, I used Magnetic Island to break up a long journey (Airlie Beach to Cairns). About 12K wide Maggie Island is pretty small and is supposedly the closest thing to the Thai islands Australia has to offer. I stayed at Base, a very lively hostel. You are required to get a ferry from Townsville out to Maggie (this was included in the price of my hostel, so I'm not sure how much this is).
I had the same issue with Maggie as I did with 1770, I'd come from somewhere I'd loved and had an amazing time so I didn't enjoy it as much as I maybe should have. I was ready to relax and enjoy some time at the beach, but not being able to go in the water caused an issue as the beach with the ocean net was the other side of the island to my hostel.
There were plenty of activities on offer, including being able to hire "Barbie" style jeeps as well as 4x4s to explore the island, along with hiking trails and a Koala santuary, however, if your on a budget this isn't much for you. The weather was perfect however, despite my desire to move on to Cairns, I did enjoy my time relaxing on the beach, I spent 2 nights here, which was more than enough for me.
